Nucleation particles in diesel exhaust: composition inferred from in situ mass spectrometric analysis.

Mass spectrometric measurements of size and composition of diesel exhaust particles have been performed under various conditions: chassis dynamometer tests, field measurements near a German motorway, and individual car chasing. Nucleation particles consisting of volatile sulfate and organic material could be detected both at the chassis dynamometer test facility and during individual car chasing. We found evidence that if nucleation occurs, sulfuric acid/water is the nucleating agent. Low-volatile organics species condense only on the preexisting sulfuric acid/water clusters. Abstract Laboratory experiments are described during which the influence of gases and particles from the exhaust of a kerosene burner on microphysical processes were studied. In one experimental investigation the evaporation rates of ice crystals polluted with the kerosene-burner exhaust were compared with the evaporation rates of pure ice crystals. During another experimental investigation the ice nucleating ability of the exhaust particles was studied in terms of the efficiency of the exhaust particles to act as deposition and condensation freezing nuclei, as immersion freezing nuclei, and as contact nuclei. Abstract The transportation sector is a major contributor to both air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Hybrid electric vehicles can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by optimizing the energy management of the powertrain. The purpose of this study is to examine the trade-off between regulated pollutant emissions and hybrid powertrain efficiency. A pilot-scale countercurrent absorption process for upgrading landfill gas to produce vehicle fuel was studied using absorption and desorption units and water as absorbent. The height-to-diameter ratio of the absorption column used was 3:1 instead of the more conventionally used 20:1 ratio, and a higher pressure was used along with a lower water flow rate. The effects of pressure (10-30 bar) and water and gas flow-ratios on the upgrading process were studied. Evolution of nitrogen concentration and ammonia production in N 2 -seeded H-mode discharges at ASDEX Upgrade

Ammonia formation was studied in a series of dedicated nitrogen seeded H-mode discharges at ASDEX Upgrade. The evolution of ammonia formation was investigated with a reference phase before the seeding, and a long, stable flat-top nitrogen-seeded phase. It was monitored with divertor spectroscopy and analysis of the exhaust gas. The amount of the detected ammonia increased continuously over the course of five discharges with the same nitrogen seeding rate. The same trend was observed in the nitrogen density in the core plasma, as measured by charge exchange recombination spectroscopy and other signals, linked to the effects of nitrogen seeding.
